The Power of Focus: Why Platform-Specific Content Matters

Social media can feel like a menacing topic, especially when you realize just how many platforms are vying for your attention. It’s daunting to feel like you have to be "on" everywhere, all at once. I prefer to break this down into smaller, manageable pieces. Focus on the one platform you already know and spend the most time on. Mastering one space is the foundation you need before you begin mastering the next.

"The code is more what you'd call 'guidelines' than actual rules."

In this post, we’re exploring platform-specific content—how to create it, why it matters, and how to do it without losing your mind.

Why Does Unique Content Matter?

It’s tempting to post the exact same thing across every app, but your audience can tell when they’re being "broadcasted" to rather than "spoken" to. Here are three reasons to tailor your approach:

1. Your Audience Changes Your follower base fluctuates from platform to platform because different generations and interests gravitate toward different spaces. If you’re curious about who you’re actually talking to, check out our blog on Target Audiences.

If you’re looking at your current followers and wondering if you’re even in the right digital room, send me a quick email. I’d love to hear what you’re seeing and help you decide where to focus your energy first.

2. Every Platform Has a Purpose Each platform has a specific objective. On Facebook, users often look for community and interaction. On Instagram, they want visual inspiration. You want to understand how the platform is used so you can meet your audience where their mindset already is.

3. The Form of Content From long-form video to quick infographics, every platform has a "favorite" format. While some support a mix, others specialize in just one. To maximize your success, you have to speak the "native language" of the app you’re using.

However, a little side note, while you're focusing on learning one platform, you can post the same content to other platforms and watch how that preforms. This will give you a benchmark for when you get to the mastering that platform. (You'll notice over next 9 months or so that my Facebook content will be exactly the same as my Instagram, because I'm learning to master one at a time.)

How to Approach Each Platform

Once you’ve mastered the one platform you enjoy most, you can use these outlines as a roadmap for branching out to the next.

  • Facebook: Think of this as your "Interactive Hub." It is the best place for informative, long-form posts, links to resources, and fun infographics. Because users are more likely to click links here, it’s a great place to drive traffic to your newest project or donation page.

  • Instagram: This is your "Digital Storefront." Since people rarely read long captions first, your first image or the very first line of your video must tell the whole story. It’s all about the aesthetic hook. Whether it’s a witty caption or a striking photo, make sure the "window display" stops the scroll.

  • TikTok: This is the "Stage" for authenticity. It’s about being unique and staying trendy. While you can post longer clips now, keeping things punchy and using trending sounds is still the best way for a small business or non-profit to reach a massive local audience overnight.

Moving Forward

Although I can’t cover every platform (I’d have to publish a book, and it would be constantly changing!). I hope this gives you the confidence to pick one social platform, master it, and move to the next when you’re ready.
